Induction heating, an applied energy process, is a selective, noncontact heating method that can be performed in air on the shop floor as well as under a protective atmosphere or in a vacuum furnace. Induction heating involves an electrically conductive material such as steel (the workpiece), an induction power source, an induction coil assembly (usually copper), and the ability to quench.

Induction heating requires a power source. A coil assembly is attached to the power source, and the workpiece is placed inside the coil. Current from the power source flows through the coil, creating invisible lines of force that issue from the coil. These lines of force induce eddy currents in the workpiece, resulting in heat. Parts can be heated to a broad range of temperatures before quenching, depending on the desired outcome.

Most notably used in the automotive industry, induction heating has several key benefits. Long process times and high surface temperatures are not required, since heat is generated within the workpiece itself, not transferred by radiation or convection. Induction heating’s quick processing time is a significant advantage for heat treaters working with high-volume parts.
